| Abstract: Âcâryas lay emphasis on the significance of the Pancamahâbhûtas in understanding Shareera when they state their involvement from conception to death i.e. from the four Bhûtas which enter Garbha1, the Pâñcabhautika Prakriti2, the Saddhâtvâtmaka Purûsha3 termed as Cikitsâdhikrita Purûsha to the Pâñcabhautikatva of indriyas4, till death quoted as Pancatvagatam5, each of the above references show a special relevance to Mahâbhûtas. An attempt is made in this study to evaluate the utility and applicability of this principle of Pancamahâbhûtas in day to day practice. There are enough evidences in the treatises to prove that these Pancamahâbhûtas and the phenomenon of Panceekarana6 mentioned in terms of Samyoga dharmas7 was used to understand and treat diseases. In support of the above concept a study on the patients of Santarpanottha Prameha has been carried out by dividing them in two groups, Group A & Group B. Here the drugs were selected on the basis of the hypothesis that the vitiated gunas of one particular group of Mahâbhutas can be countered with the administration of dravyas having opposite Mahâbhautika guna dominancy8, i.e. Âkâsha, Vâyu, Prithvi, or Agni. In Group A – Triphalâdi Yoga was administered. In Group B – Citraka Curna was given9. The result was assessed after six weeks with the help of a specially prepared Proforma. All the important haematological, Biochemical & Urine investigations were done. Symptomatically significant results were found in Group A as compared to Group B. | |
