Ayush- 56 An Anti Epileptic Drug

Epilepsy (Apasmara) is one of the most important problems attracted the Council’s attention. After identifying this disease, a survey of classical texts and of the practices prevalent for treatment of this malady was made. A combination of extracts of N. Jatamansi and Marselia minuta was developed, patented and coded as Ayush-56.

Clinical study

This compound was tried under uniform conditions at Central Research Institute Ayurveda, New Delhi, Regional Research Institute, Kolkata and Ayurvedic Research Unit, Bangalore on 805 patients.

Dosages

Adults: 2 tablets (250 mg. each) thrice daily with water.

Children: 1 tablet (250 mg.) thrice daily.

It was observed that maximum number of patients were males of Vata-pitta (Dwandaja) prakriti, educated and from economically poor class. The majority of cases were in the age group of 20 years and below, and the age of onset was largely upto 20 years. The drug normalizes disturbed sleep and improves memory. To confirm these findings, a random sample of 25 cases was taken and (‘T’) test was applied to see whether the frequency of attack has come down due to chance or due to the effect of the drug. The test concluded that the frequency in reduction of fits is due to the effect of the drug only.

Conclusion:

a) It is helpful in the management of psychotic patients.
b) It increases learning capacity.
c) It is useful in patients of cysticercosis.
d) It increases activity and reflexibility of the patient.
e) No withdrawal effect was observed from slowly tapering off the modern medicine with this drug.

Toxicity

No reaction or toxicity was observed even after 10 years of administration of the drug in prescribed doses.

The drug did not show any interactant effect.
